February: The Month of Romance

The month of romance has arrived with February 14th serving as the day to exchange gifts and treats as one’s proclamation of love. The history of Valentine’s Day is uncertain with a number of myths claiming to encapsulate its origin. Valentine’s Day today still has threads of ancient tradition.

A couple of my favorite versions of the origin of Valentine’s Day deal with the preservation of love and the kindling of fertility. The first myth, according to history.com, asserts that St. Valentine was a priest that served during the time of Claudius the II in third century Rome. Claudius the II enforced a law that stated that his young soldiers could not marry fearing that this would “soften” them. St. Valentine, recognizing the injustice of this law, continued to secretly marry young soldiers. When St. Valentine’s actions were divulged, he was put to death. Therefore, this myth intimates that Valentine’s Day spawned from martyrdom for the sake of communal love.

Whatever the true origins of Valentine’s Day, it is clear that the practice of recognizing one’s love during the middle of February has been a long ever evolving tradition. This year, continue this jovial and romantic tradition by gifting your lovely lady with some wonderful Valentine’s Day pieces.
