Designer Spotlight | John Hardy

You may have seen the name John Hardy everywhere over the years in retail stores, fashion magazines, on billboards and social networks. But who is John Hardy and what makes the brand so different from other jewelry designers? The John Hardy brand is storytelling, inspiring, and a force for positive change.

John Hardy found his way to Bali in the 70’s. Enchanted by the sublime beauty of the island and artisans, he began the study of Balinese ancient jewelry. Hardy’s artisan mentor descended from goldsmiths who created jewelry for the Royal Court of Bali; these ancient techniques and traditions are applied with added modern innovation. John Hardy established the brand in 1975 based on three essential values: community, artisanship and sustainable luxury.

John Hardy is more than a piece of jewelry; it’s a story of a continual connection to nature, tradition, and values. New Design Director Hollie Barden carries forward the company’s vision through a woman’s eyes of beauty in artisan handcrafted jewelry that is powerful, dramatic and inspiring.

John Hardy represents four collections: Classic Chain, Dot, Bamboo and Naga. Every piece that is created goes through a lauded eight step fine jewelry process. It starts with the designer’s vision through pencil and watercolor, and continues on to the processes of wax carving, master casting, molding, creating a wax tree, pouring sterling silver or gold, then hand-cutting and hand-finishing. Each piece is shaped by hand and honors the transmission of creative energy from the artisan to the wearer.

John Hardy brand strongly believes in sustainable renewal. To offset the company’s carbon footprint, “Wear Bamboo, Plant Bamboo” program plants bamboo seedlings for every purchase from the Bamboo Collection. Each piece has a number engraved on the inside to signify how many Bamboo seedlings are planted. For spring 2017, Bamboo collection is powerful with brushed finishes and gold accents. This season soft spring colors are introduced through natural white, gray and peach moonstone inspired by a vision of moonlight shining on waterlilies. The scene is hand engraved on the underside of the piece, a brand signature.
