1948 St. Moritz Winter Olympics
After 12 long years filled with war, the Olympic games took place once again. St. Moritz, Switzerland had the privilege of hosting the “Games of Renewal” in 1948. OMEGA was the official timekeeper of these Olympic games and brought with them a new technology. Instead of just sending stopwatches to the games, as they had previously done, they sent a five-man team to do official timings in a converted Chevrolet.
Not only did OMEGA send their own team, but they sent along new timing technology as well. The 1948 Winter Games was the first appearance of the photoelectric cells. These photoelectric cells, used with the new photo-finish camera kick started the modern ear of sports timekeeping.
