Feeling Blue

As summer quickly turns to fall, it’s easy to wish for those long summer nights. A great way to get over those end of summer blues is to enjoy a rare blue diamond.

Naturally occurring blue diamonds are very rare and in-turn are very expensive. Blue diamonds of any size often get snatched up by collectors very quickly.

If you are lucky enough to get your hands on a beautiful blue diamond piece, you can be confident your piece is one of a kind. Blue diamonds have not entered public consciousness like yellow or pink diamonds, which makes them that much more special.

Blue diamonds range in color, just like every other diamond, but the range is very narrow. The range of color in blue diamonds is more related to tone rather than saturation. Blue diamonds range from light to dark (tone) rather than strength of color (saturation). The tones range from whites to blues and greys to blacks, and from faint to vivid. A professional jeweler will be able to place your blue diamond under a microscope and verify its authenticity.

And now for the most famous blue diamond: the Hope diamond. The Hope diamond is famous for its history just as much as its rarity. The Hope diamond is 45 carats and is a strongly colored rich deep blue diamond that was originally found in India. It was taken to Europe in the 17th century and became part of the French royal jewelry collection. During the French revolution, the diamond was stolen and disappeared for a few decades. The diamond resurfaced and was picked up by the English. It was bought and sold several times to pay off debts, and eventually ended up in the hands of Harry Winston. In 1958, Harry Winston donated the Hope diamond to the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C. where it has remained ever since. For those of us that cannot own a blue diamond for ourselves, we can head to Washington, D.C. and see just how beautiful nature can be.
