Happy Tourbillon Day!
June 26th, 1801 marks the dated when Breguet founder, Abraham-Louis Breguet, the father of modern horology, received the patent for movement that would neutralize the effects of gravity in pocket watches forever.
He called it the “tourbillon.” Some say it is a reference to the French word for “whirlwind,” others point to a more scientific direction, the word for “vortex.” This cage-like device encased all the main components of a mechanical timepiece into one singular contraption that spins to evenly spread the margin of error from one position to another throughout the course of the day.
Today, the Tourbillon is a symbol of the highest level of watchmaking, one that denotes superior engineering as well as prestige craftsmanship.
