Oslo Olympics 1952
In 1952 the Winter Olympic Games were held in Oslo, Norway for the first time. Norway is the birthplace of modern skiing, so the winter Olympic Games were seen as a homecoming. Not only was this the first Olympic Games for Oslo, but it was the first time women were able to compete in the cross country skiing competition.
There were many innovations made by the official timekeepers, Longines, when it came to the 1952 Games; the biggest being for the sport of figure skating. For the first time, computers were used to calculate the scores given by multiple judges and were shown immediately.
Longines’ presence at the Olympics has not been as prominent as some other timekeeping brands, but they have been very active in sports since the late 1800’s. A variety of Longines timepieces can be found at your local Hyde Park or Traditional Jewelers to fit your sporting needs.
