Sapphires and Diamonds | The Royal Jewels

When thinking about the royal jewels, the first thing that may come to mind is Kate’s beautiful sapphire and diamond wedding ring from Prince William. While the ring is iconic, this is not the first time a member of the royal family has worn sapphire and diamond jewelry.
The trend of sapphire and diamond jewels made a statement in the royal family when Queen Victoria received a wedding gift from her groom. Prince Albert gave Queen Victoria a sapphire and diamond brooch the night before their wedding, and could be seen wearing it for much of her life. The brooch quickly became known as the “Prince Albert brooch” and was passed down throughout the generations, and is now in the possession of Queen Elizabeth II. Queen Elizabeth II is the great-great granddaughter of Queen Victoria and can often be seen wearing the family heirloom.
Although Queen Elizabeth II has yet to pass the brooch on to the next generation, the sapphire and diamond trend lives on in the royal family. When Prince Charles and Princess Diana got engaged, Diana got a sapphire and diamond wedding ring, which became a part of her distinct style. While married to Prince Charles, Princess Diana received numerous other sapphire and diamond pieces of jewelry, including sapphire and diamond earrings from the Saudi royal family.
After Princess Diana’s tragic passing, Princes William and Harry had the chance to select pieces from their mother’s jewelry collection for their own keeping. Prince Harry chose Princess Diana’s sapphire and diamond wedding ring, while Prince William chose her yellow gold Cartier watch. When Prince William decided to purpose to Kate, Prince Harry gave Prince William their mother’s ring to purpose with. In 2010, Prince William gave Kate his mother’s sapphire and diamond wedding ring in exchange for the promise of a life together.
Princess Diana, or should I say, Kate’s sapphire and diamond wedding ring has served as inspiration for many designers in today’s market. Designers JB Star and Penny Preville, just to name a few, have created sapphire and diamond rings that mimic the color and style of Kate’s ring because let’s face it, what women doesn’t want to feel like a princess sometimes?
